Southen Living Pinto Beans

These aren’t your Granny’s  “soup beans”. This pinto bean recipe is so simply delicious. For the sceptics out there, this recipe will change the way you feel about southern cooking.

You guessed it, this recipe originated in Southern Living Magazine. I found it on and adapted it from a post by Caroline Cooks.

Please Enjoy!

Place beans in a large Dutch oven, and add water to cover.

 Bring to a boil, and cook, uncovered, 30 minutes.


 Add ham hock, tomatoes, broth, and next 10 ingredients to Dutch oven with beans; cook 55 minutes or until beans are tender.

 Serve over rice.

(If you feel that this recipe needs salt do not add it until just before serving. As the recipe cooks down it becomes salty from the ham hocks. If you feel that you would like more “soup” add a bit more water or chicken broth the last 10 minutes of cooking.)
